Open To: Ohio and National Artists
Commission Amount: $146,000
Entry Open Date: Friday, July 23, 2021
Entry Deadline: Friday, September 10, 2021

Project Summary: Bowling Green State University (BGSU) is inviting Ohio and national artists to submit up to nine (9) digital images of past work for the School of the Built Environment Percent for Art Project commission. From the submissions, a group of semi-finalists will be selected to visit the campus (virtually if required), meet with the committee (comprised of BGSU faculty and staff), and visit the artwork site location(s) to create a site-specific artwork proposal. BGSU employees and their spouses are not eligible to apply for this commission. Students enrolled in any degree-granting program are not eligible to apply.

Project Background and Building History:
BGSU’s School of the Built Environment is the only school of its kind in the state of Ohio. The newly founded school offers a transformative experience for students who seek to engage in design-build innovation and the creation of exemplary places, structures, and systems with the penultimate goal of shaping the future of our built environment. Housed within the College of Technology, Architecture, and Applied Engineering, the School of the Built Environment comprises the Department of Architecture and Environmental Design and the Department of Construction Management, two units of established histories, collaborations, and synergies. Within the school, four degree programs are offered, including one certificate. These include:

  • Bachelor of Science in Architecture
  • Bachelor of Science in Construction Management
  • Master of Architecture
  • Master of Technology Management - Construction Management; and
  • Graduate Certificate in Construction Management.

Mission of School/Site: The mission and core values of the school highlight the impact and significance of architectural practice and construction management on the user, the environment, and the broader socio-economic context.  Students are immersed in a cutting-edge interdisciplinary learning environment – one that seamlessly infuses design, technical, and management education. The programs remain distinct because 2-3 paid co-op experiences are required, which typically transition into full-time job opportunities for students upon graduation.

Artistic Goals of the Commissioned Piece: The artwork should enliven and enamor visitors and be a showpiece for the student-centric space. The work should be thought-provoking, inspirational, and communicate vitality, creativity, and possibility. The artwork should leave the viewer curious, engaged, intrigued, inspired, amazed, and awe-struck. The artwork should include themes of parametric modeling coupled with materiality and light, with technology and computer-aided design included in its development. The work should express the ideas of synergy, cooperation, and collaboration and characterize the process of moving from concept to design to production. The artwork should bring together constructs of architecture, construction, design, and innovation. Multiple materials can be used in the making of the work.

Practical Considerations:
Artwork considered for the School of the Built Environment project must be durable and suitably maintenance-free. The School of the Built Environment is where construction management and architecture collide. The state-of-the-art facility integrates design, technology, and engineering. The artwork will be installed in a student-centric space that includes high-traffic flow. The interior, atrium work could interact with light and space and be suspended. There could be work that inter-plays between the walls, the ceiling, and the floor. Images of the space are attached.

Selection Review Process:
Interested artists should complete the online form by visiting: https://ohiopercentforart-bgsucommissionannouncement.artcall.org

In addition to the images, artists are requested to submit the following documents:
1.           an image list with title, dimensions, materials, date, and price/commission in the order that images are uploaded

Artist bio/resume should be entered into the bio/cv field and the artist statement should be entered into the artist statement field on the profile page.

The Advisory Selection Committee will review submitted materials and will develop a list of semi-finalist artists that will be invited to meet with the committee for a site visit. After the site visit, the semi-finalists will create a site-specific proposal for artwork for the Built Environment project. Each semi-finalist will be offered a proposal fee in addition to an honorarium for their site visit.  Artist proposals will be judged competitively by the Committee.  Submitted proposals become the property of Bowling Green State University.
